The rugged Norwegian Mountains are packed with opportunities for adventure and exploration. Scaling walls, discovering caves, taking in breathtaking vistas and more. The availability and proximity to world class mountains is unmatched. We offer a variety of trips and courses designed to maximise the beauty surrounding us here in Meløy. To truly experience the freedom of the hills you need to access these mountains from all directions, above, on the side, and underneath.
A glacier is a distinctive world. The ice is a deep blue colour and forms summits and ridges with deep crevasses in between. Svartisen is the second largest glacier in Norway and covers an incredible 372 km2 of the country in ice. Our access point to the glacier is the lowest of any of the European mainland, at about 100 meters above sea level. These surroundings are perfect for a range of activities. We have several trips and difficulty levels to choose from.
Prepare yourself for two long day out together with a qualified guide. The first day starts early as we have long to go: all the way up a steep mountain path, til we have arrived at DNT cabin “Tåkeheimen”, beautifully situated at the glacier side, well above 1000 meters over sea level. Here we pack out and spend the night. The morning after we prepare to cross the glacier laying in front of us, our eyes fixed on the mountain top (1236m) ahead. Crampons are strapped onto our feet, axes in our hands; everyone is part of the rope-team which ensures safe travel over the glacier ice. Our guide navigates safely through and over crevasses, using at times ice-screws to ensure safe passage. Once on “the other side” the landscape opens up and we´re only a short climb away from the mountaintop. Clear signs of melting glaciers surround us, but the beauty of it all stays unparalleled. After a short break at the top, soaking in everything we return to make our way down towards the sea. Usually the trip on the first day takes approx. 5 hours including several short breaks. The next day will take you out for about the same amount of time. You will definitely feel it in your legs, but we promise it will be worth the muscle-ache! Our guides have over a decade of experience guiding on glaciers and mountains ensuring you get top quality, professional training. All our guides are qualified to work in the outdoors, holding nationally and/or internationally recognized qualifications. 2019 season: we arrange this glacier crossing/summit trip on request, for groups only. Raw and young, the landscape around the glacier Svartisen is steep and rugged and its weather is capricious.
You can go from sun in the morning to cold winds, rain, and snow in the afternoon. It is a dramatic place that engages your senses, challenges you physically and mentally, and promises to give you the adventure of a lifetime.
Offering mountain after mountain with long ridge traverses, and tons of new route potential. In other words: unparalleled adventures.
As well as offering a challenging but fun introduction to mountaineering for relative novices, our Alpine Mountaineering Training is particularly valuable for people with climbing experience, who want to progress to higher mountains in glaciated areas.
We teach the full range of skills needed for safe mountaineering on all types of alpine terrain. Including: rope work and rock skills on the first day, snow & ice climbing on the second and third. You can extend the training with high mountaineering in the latter part of the week where snow craft is incorporated into the program.
An important aspect of the training is that participants have plenty of opportunity to practice the techniques, and to lead the climbing rope for themselves wherever possible. The areas that we use for this training have been carefully selected to provide the best possible climbs for you to practice and develop your skills, with expert coaching and supervision from the Rocks & Rivers guides.
